General information
Since the start of production of VW Golf, Jetta, Scirocco cars, changes have been made to the design of the gear shift drive.
On models with a 1.1 / 1.3 liter engine, the four forward gears are engaged in the usual way, and in order to engage reverse gear, the resistance of the reverse gear lock spring must be overcome. On early release cars (until August 1975, gearboxes up to No. GF 03094) the reverse gear lock is located in the gearshift mechanism inside the gearbox, and to engage reverse gear, you need to push the gearshift lever to the side (pic. I:20). On later machines (since September 1975) the reverse gear is built into the gearshift drive, and to engage reverse gear, you must press the lever down (pic. I:21). This shift actuator cannot be installed on a vehicle with an earlier gearbox (up to №GF 03094).
In August 1980, the drive was further upgraded. The front shift linkage bearing plate has been removed and the linkage is connected to the selector rod via a ball stud located on the selector lever that is inserted into the selector rod pin bushing. The gearshift lever has a curved shape (instead of straight on earlier models).
Drive with side reverse gear (adjustment)
First adjust the longitudinal position of the gear lever. To do this, put the lever in the neutral position, loosen the two nuts securing the lower lever base plate, and slide the plate so that the lower part of the lever is vertical or slightly inclined (5°) back (pic. I:18). Tighten nuts.
To adjust the transverse position of the lever, turn on the reverse gear, loosen the nuts securing the front support plate of the gear shift rod (pic. I:19) and move the plate until the lever is in the vertical position (when looking at it from behind). Tighten nuts and check up ease of inclusion of all transfers. Reverse must be engaged only after overcoming the force of the blocker spring.
Bottom reverse drive (adjustment)
The transverse position of the lever is adjusted by moving the front support plate of the shift rod (pic. I:22). Distance "X" there must be 6 mm between the gear selector lever and the selector rod pin when the gear lever is in neutral. Measure the distance with a feeler gauge of the appropriate thickness. After tightening the nuts, check the adjustment.
To adjust the longitudinal position of the shift lever, loosen the clamp nut (shown by the arrow in Fig. I:22) and move the gear selector lever. It is recommended to use a special template VW 2087 for adjustment, but you can do without it. With proper adjustment, all gears should turn on easily, without jamming. Check the operation of the reverse gear.
On later models (since August 1980) drive adjustment is carried out entirely by moving the selector lever along the gearshift rod. For adjustment, it is recommended to use the VW 3069 template, but you can do without it. After tightening the clamp nut, check the ease of engagement of all gears and the operation of the reverse gear.
