A crankshaft speed meter and a stroboscope are used for checking and adjustment (ignition timing flash lamp).

Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature. Operating temperature is reached when the coolant hose at the bottom of the radiator becomes warm. The oil temperature in a carburetor engine should be at least +60°C, in an engine with an injection system - at least +80°C.

Turn off the lights and air conditioning.

Turn off the ignition.

Turn off the ignition.

Connect the engine crankshaft speed meter and stroboscope in accordance with their operating instructions.

Note: If the TSZ-H system is present, the hose to the vacuum advance regulator, depending on the model, is disconnected and plugged with a plug or remains connected, see the table of ignition advance values.

TBZ-H. VEZ, KE-Motronic systems: start the engine and let it idle.

TBZ-H. VEZ, KE-Motronic systems: start the engine and let it idle.

Digifant System (engines with the designation PF, PB, 2E, PG): Disconnect the blue plug from the temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is located on the coolant pipe next to the spark plug tip. Start the engine and set the crankshaft speed to 2250±250 1/min by applying gas.

Direct the flashing light of the strobe light into the inspection window of the clutch housing (arrow).

The information is posted on this resource [VWmanual]

Note: The viewing window is usually covered with a rubber plug, which should be removed.

Caution: Risk of injury from rotating belt pulley and V-belt.

The ignition is adjusted correctly if, when the strobe light flashes, the ignition advance risk on the flywheel stands still under the installation mark on the clutch housing.

If the marks do not match, slightly loosen the distributor mounting bolt and turn the ignition distributor until the mark with the corresponding ignition advance angle value is under the installation mark. To turn the distributor, if there is a TSZ system, you can lightly tap the vacuum ignition advance regulator with the handle of a wrench.

Tighten the distributor mounting bolt to 25 Nm.

Check idle speed adjustment.

After this, check the ignition timing again.

Remove measuring instruments.

If they were disconnected, connect the vacuum hose to the ignition distributor and the plug to the temperature sensor.
