Checking the distributor cap (VW Passat B3)

Remove the distributor cap by using a screwdriver to press the two clamps on the side.

The lid should be dry inside. Check the internal contacts for wear and corrosion, if necessary, clean the contacts with a file.

Check the central carbon contact for mobility and wear by pressing on the contact with your finger.

Check the distributor cap for leakage current on the surface. The presence of leakage current is indicated by thin uneven marks on the surface of the cap.

Wipe the cover with a clean, dry cloth and inspect for microcracks. Replace the cover if necessary. Finally, spray the inside of the cover with contact spray.

Remove the distributor rotor and check for microcracks. Both contacts, in the center and on the edge, should be clean; if necessary, clean the contacts.

Lubricate the felt of the distributor shaft with one drop of oil.

Install the distributor runner so that the runner protrusion is fixed in the groove of the distributor shaft. The runner can be easily rotated in both directions to ensure that it is securely seated.

Install the distributor cap so that the projection on the cap fits into the groove of the distributor housing. The cap is easy to press and secure with two clamps. To do this, press the clamps one after the other onto the cap and press with your thumb in the middle so that they are secured to the cap. Turn the cap in both directions to ensure that it is securely fastened.
