Checking and adjusting the ignition timing
1. Ignition distributor; 2. High voltage cable 1 cylinder; 3. Spark plug 1 cylinder; 4. Connecting the stroboscope with the battery; 5. Stroboscope; 6. Capacitive strobe clamp
4- and 5-cylinder engine
A tachometer and a stroboscope are required for checking and adjustment.
Attention! Adjust the ignition timing only after installing the ignition distributor, if the value of the ignition timing when checking the idle speed or CO content is outside the required value.
1. Turn off the air conditioner (if available).
2. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. The coolant temperature is about 80°C.
3. Stop the engine.
4. Connect a tachometer to terminal 1 and terminal 15 of the ignition coil (high voltage transformer).
Attention! In this case, the ignition must be switched off.
5. Connect a stroboscope to the positive and negative poles of the battery. Connect the capacitive clamp to the high voltage wire of cylinder 1.
6. Remove the crankcase ventilation hose from the pressure control valve and position it so that only clean air enters it.
7. Let the engine run at idle or high speed until the radiator fan turns on. Then leave the engine to idle, disconnect the plug of the coolant temperature sensor (2-pole).
Warning! If the engine stops after disconnecting the plug, connect the plug to the coolant temperature sensor before restarting. Otherwise, the control unit will operate in emergency mode, in which the correct check and adjustment is not possible.
8. Let the engine run at test speed.
9. Direct a strobe light into the clutch housing inspection hole.
Warning! There is a risk of injury if the fan is switched on suddenly. Before testing, disconnect its plug connection.
10. The ignition is adjusted correctly if, during flashes, the notch of the ignition moment under the corresponding mark is in place.
11. If the ignition timing is outside the control values, adjust the ignition timing to the required value.
12. To do this, slightly loosen the locking screw (s) on the distributor and turn the ignition distributor so that the adjustment value coincides with the corresponding mark.
13. Tighten screw (s) fastening torque 25 Nm.
14. Connect the connector of the coolant temperature sensor (2-pole) and 3 times "give gas".
15. Check idle adjustment.
16. Disconnect the gauges with the ignition off.
17. At the VW workshop, interrogate and delete the recorded fault from the memory of the control unit. As a result of the disconnection of the coolant temperature sensor plug, a malfunction is stored in the memory "Faulty sensor". A memory entry can also be erased by disconnecting the battery.
