Contents: Removal ↓ Installation ↓
Complete removal of the ignition distributor is only necessary for major repairs. On engines with VEZ and Ke-Motronic systems, the ignition distributor is located on the side of the cylinder head. This describes how to remove the distributor from engines equipped with TSZ and Digifant ignition systems.
Removal
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Setting the engine crankshaft to the position corresponding to TDC at the moment of ignition for cylinder 1.
Shift the gearbox into neutral and apply the handbrake.
Using the central bolt securing the belt pulley to the crankshaft, turn the crankshaft clockwise.
Attention: Depending on the car model for turning! the motor shaft may require a longer end head, such as the 3/8-inch HAZET 880TZ-1S. Other ways to turn the crankshaft: put the car in 4th or 5th gear and move the car, or lift the car in front and turn the front wheel when the gear is on.

Turn the crankshaft until the groove on the belt pulley aligns with the arrow on the toothed belt cover "B". At the same time, the mark on the flywheel in the clutch housing must align with the installation mark "A".

Check whether the mark on the camshaft gear matches the top edge of the cover. If necessary, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution.
Remove the high-voltage wires or cover from the distributor by pressing the clamp on one side with a screwdriver.
Disconnect the hose from the vacuum advance regulator.
If present, remove the plastic cap (stopper) from the clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. This will destroy the cap.
Loosen the distributor base clamp bolt, remove the pressure plate and pull out the ignition distributor.
Caution: Do not change the engine adjustment with the distributor removed.
Installation
Before installation, check that the engine shaft is in the TDC position for cylinder 1. This means that the marks on the crankshaft pulley and, accordingly, on the flywheel and camshaft gear must simultaneously coincide.

In the opening of the ignition distributor, place the drive journal of the oil pump shaft parallel to the crankshaft (longitudinal axis of the engine).

Place the distributor runner so that the mark on the tongue is against the recess on the edge of the distributor housing. To do this, remove the dust cap.
Insert the ignition distributor in this position and secure it with the clamping bar and bolt. Don't forget to install the sealing ring.
Remove the distributor runner, put on the dust cap and reinstall the runner. Check if the runner is securely installed by gently turning it in different directions.
Clean the distributor cap from the inside and install it in place, see below in this chapter.
Connect the hose to the vacuum advance regulator.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Adjust the ignition timing.
