Sectional view of valve control mechanism with hydraulic pusher:
1 - camshaft cam
2 - cavity for oil
3 - back cap
4 - oil supply with annular groove
5 - high pressure cavity
6 - valve stem
7 - pressure spring
8 - cylinder
9 - piston

Oil under high pressure is shown in red: pink is the amount of oil not used to drive the valve.
On diesel engines «Volkswagen» cylinder head gaskets of various thicknesses are installed depending on whether the pistons used have deviations in the upper or lower part. Since the gasket, as we know, is installed between the block and the cylinder head, it is possible, by choosing its thickness, to vary the height of the combustion chamber and thus equalize the different heights of the pistons.
