Cylinders, as already mentioned, are part of the cylinder block. The four cylinder bores are the guides for the pistons and are ground in a special way. The walls do not have to be perfectly smooth, as otherwise the oil needed for lubrication will not be able to stick to them. The cylinder bores are 0.03 mm wider than the corresponding pistons. Cylinder surfaces may be ground no more than three times during engine repair in order to remove signs of wear.
