The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft. This timing belt with steel wire inserts is of great importance for diesel engine. The engine's small combustion chamber prevents one of the valves from opening and. therefore, opened the combustion chamber a little at the moment when the corresponding piston moves up to top dead center. This can happen when the timing belt breaks or (due to weak tension or the ingestion of a foreign object) skips a few teeth on the pulley. In this case, the valve immediately hits the bottom of the piston, which leads to a dangerous so-called «lettuce pistons/valves». The damage will be so significant that repair is impossible.
