Before removing the gearbox, raise the engine on supports. In the workshops, a special device is used for this. If such a device is not available, you can do the following:
Above the engine compartment, between the edges of the wings, lay a metal beam with sufficient bending rigidity. Under its ends it is necessary to enclose a thick cloth so as not to damage the paintwork of the body.
Connect the beam to the hole in the eyebolt of the engine with a thick steel wire. In the middle of the loop, twist the wire so as to reduce the load on the engine mount (pic. 276). The dismantling of the gearbox must be done as follows:
Disconnect the battery to avoid accidental short circuit.
The radiator can be removed for easier access to the transmission mounts.
Remove the washer reservoir, as it will impede further work.
Raise the engine on stands. Disconnect the end of the clutch cable from the lever after loosening its adjusting nut. Remove cable from bracket (see fig. 271).
Turn away the bolts connecting the engine with a transmission accessible from above.
Loosen the top starter mounting bolts.
Loosen the clamp on the coolant pipe and remove the retaining plate. Completely disconnect the starter and remove it. Loosen the speedometer flexible shaft fastening nut and move it aside.
Loosen the gearbox mounting bolts (pic. 277). Further operations have been described in chapter «Removal and installation of the carburetor engine».
From the bottom of the car, unscrew the bolts securing the gearshift mechanism (pic. 278). Loosen the clutch pressure plate mounting bolts.
Disconnect the right drive shaft from the gearbox flange. To unscrew the bolts, use a socket wrench with a dodecagonal nozzle. Suspend the drive shaft on the wire so that it does not interfere when removing the gearbox.
Remove the transmission support assembly.
Disconnect the electrical wire going to the reversing light switch.
Disconnect wire from gearbox «masses».
Disconnect the left drive shaft in the same way as the right one, and then hang it on the wire. Remove the remaining bolts connecting the gearbox to the engine, and separate it from the engine with a screwdriver. If it is not possible to use the help of an assistant, a jack must be placed under the gearbox.
The gearbox is installed in the reverse order. Gearbox mount design described here. The engine and gearbox must rest freely on supports. The bolts connecting the engine and gearbox are tightened with a torque of 55 Nm, and the bolts for fastening the drive shafts with a torque of 45 Nm. The tightening torques for the bolts securing the gearbox to the supports are given on rice. 36.
