In a car with a suction diesel engine, disc brakes with a floating caliper are installed. This means that the caliper is located movably, it is floating. In previous years of production of cars, floating calipers were mounted, along with the ATE company, also by the Girling company (see illustrations).
The Golf GTD model is equipped with so-called cam disc brakes with floating calipers. Similarly, the movable caliper in this case looks like a clenched fist.
Piston in the cylinder body (in the brake mechanisms of both options) presses the inner lining towards the brake disc, causing the cylinder body to move; the brake pad on the other side also moves towards the disc.
Note. During rain, the exposed brake disc is washed with water, which reduces the braking effect. This is even more important for rear drum brakes. The moisture between the brake discs and the pads must evaporate. In winter, when a lot of salt is scattered on the roads, this phenomenon is intensified. Therefore, after water and salt "baths", the brakes should be periodically dried by lightly pressing the pedal while driving. Before parking for the night, you should drive a few dozen meters, braking to remove moisture from the brakes.
Note. In floating caliper disc brakes, the lining only moves back after braking after a few meters of travel. Therefore, the front wheels with floating caliper disc brakes are only completely released after a few meters of travel. Traces of worn lining can be found on the wheel rims in the form of a black powder. Over time, this powder sticks strongly to the surfaces, so the wheel rims (and above all made of light metal) it should be cleaned regularly with a brush and, if necessary, with a cleaning agent.
