Replacing disc brake pads (VW Golf 1)

The linings are all changed at the same time. Only those linings may be used that have a general approval for use. The retaining springs and lining brackets should also be changed. In disc brake mechanisms with floating calipers, the pistons shift as the linings wear out. Therefore, they must be moved back before installing new, thicker linings. In this case, the brake fluid is squeezed back into the reservoir through the pipes. If additional brake fluid was added to the reservoir unnecessarily between changing the pads, the excess must now be sucked out. Otherwise, the leaking brake fluid may damage the painted parts in the engine compartment. It is recommended to use a completely clean pipette or an old injection syringe for sucking out.

Raise the front of the car onto supports.

Remove the wheel.

Rotate the steering wheel to provide good access to the pads.

To remove the lining in a disc brake mechanism with a floating caliper, after pulling out the clamps (2), you can remove the spacer spring (1).

Then you need to take out the inner cover (3). Move the bracket (5) outward, if necessary, lightly hit it with a hammer. Only now can you remove the outer cover (4), releasing it from the locking protrusion of the movable frame.
