In this chapter, only the distinctive features for removing and installing brake pads for the rear disc brake are given.
Removing
Attention: If the brake pads are to be reinstalled, their location must be marked before removal. It is not allowed to change the pads in places, for example, to change the outer one from the inner one or to rearrange from the right wheel to the left one and vice versa. Repositioning the pads can result in uneven braking action. It is recommended to use only original brake pads approved by the vehicle manufacturer. It is imperative to replace all the brake pads of the bridge at the same time, even if only one of them has reached the wear limit.
On vehicles with a brake pad wear sensor, disconnect the connector from the sensor, see the relevant chapter on front disc brakes.
Release the hand brake lever. Using a screwdriver, press out locking clip -1- and remove downwards.
Press brake lever -2- in direction of arrow and detach handbrake cable -3-. Remove the handbrake cable from the holder on the brake caliper.
Loosen upper and lower brake caliper bolts -15- while holding corresponding guide pins, see figure S46-0097.
Remove the caliper body and hang it on a wire to the body or a coiled spring.
Attention: The brake hose must not be stretched or twisted.
Remove brake pads and retaining springs -arrows-.
Measure the thickness of the brake disc, see relevant chapter.
Clean the brake caliper.
Attention: Do not use any wire brushes to clean the case. Clean the brake caliper with alcohol only.
Installation
Using the special tool VW-3272 or HAZET 4970/6, press the piston into the caliper brake cylinder.
Attention: The piston must not be pressed in with a normal return tool as this will destroy the adjustment mechanism for the handbrake.
Using a special tool under strong pressure, slowly screw in the piston by turning to the right (clockwise). Tool collar -left arrow- must rest on brake caliper. If the piston stroke is difficult, use a 13 mm wrench to turn it by the flats -A- on the tool spindle.
Remove the protective film from the back of the brake pads.
Insert retaining springs -arrows- and brake shoes into brake shoe guide.
Note: The repair kit contains 4 self-locking screws.
These bolts must be used every time.
While holding the guide pins, screw the brake caliper to the brake pad guide with new self-locking bolts. Tighten the fastening bolts to 35 Nm.
Press the brake lever down and attach the handbrake cable to it.
Secure the handbrake cable to the anti-support with a retaining clip.
Adjust handbrake, see relevant chapter.
Repeatedly strongly depress the brake pedal at a stationary car, check the level of brake fluid in the compensation tank.
