Before starting the engine, place the gear shift lever in neutral (for an automatic transmission, set the selector to position "P" or "N") and securely apply the parking brake.
On a car with a manual transmission, press the clutch pedal when starting the engine - the starter should rotate only the engine crankshaft.
As soon as the engine starts, immediately release the ignition key - the starter should not rotate with the engine.
After starting a cold engine, it will operate with increased noise for a short time, since the oil pressure in the hydraulic valve clearance compensators is not yet high enough. This is normal and should not worry you.
Do not allow the engine to run hot when parked! Switch it off immediately!
Until the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature, avoid giving it high speeds and full fuel supply.
When towing vehicles with a catalytic converter for cleaning exhaust gases, do not continue to try to start the engine if the towing distance is more than 50 m. Unburned fuel may enter the catalytic converter and damage it.
Before attempting to start the engine by towing, you should try to jump start it using another vehicle's battery.

Petrol engines
These engines are equipped with a fuel injection system that automatically ensures the optimum ratio between fuel and air at any outside temperature.
Before starting a cold or warm engine and during starting, do not press the accelerator pedal.
If you are unable to start the engine immediately, you should pause the starting process after 10 seconds and repeat it after half a minute.
If the engine still does not start, the fuel pump electric drive fuse should be checked.
After starting a very hot engine, it should be allowed to run at medium speed for some time.
Diesel engines
Pre-heating device
After switching on the driving position ("Ignition on"), the control lamp, depending on the temperature of the engine coolant, signals or does not signal the need for pre-heating.
Cold engine starting
At outside temperatures above +5°C: the engine can be started immediately without preheating. Do not press the accelerator pedal during starting.
At outside temperature below +5°C: turn the ignition key to position 2 – the pre-heating indicator lamp will light. The lamp will go out after reaching a temperature sufficient for fuel ignition.
When the pre-heating is on, all other large current consumers must be switched off, otherwise the battery will be overloaded with a large current.
Start the engine immediately after the indicator lamp goes out.
Do not press the accelerator pedal during starting.
If the ignition of the fuel in the engine is still unstable, allow the starter to work for a few more seconds (no more than half a minute), until the engine can run on its own.
If the engine does not start, turn on the preheater again and then try to start the engine again as described above. If this time the engine still does not start, check the preheater fuse - it may be blown.
Starting the engine when it is warmed up to operating temperature
The pre-heating indicator lamp does not light up – the engine may start immediately.
Starting the engine after the fuel tank has been used up
If the fuel tank of a diesel vehicle has been completely depleted, the process of starting the engine after refueling may take longer than usual – it can take up to one minute. The reason is that the fuel supply system can only be freed of air during the process of starting the engine.
