The starter is a mixed-excitation DC motor with an electromagnetic traction relay. The starter consists of a housing or a stator with excitation windings, an armature with an overrunning clutch, a cover with brush holders and a traction relay.
When the starter is turned on, current from the battery begins to flow through the winding of the starter traction relay. The relay armature pulls in and the relay contacts close. At the same time, the relay armature moves the overrunning clutch with the gear through the lever. The overrunning clutch hub turns on the screw splines of the starter armature shaft and also turns the gear, which facilitates its engagement with the flywheel ring gear. Through the closed contacts of the traction relay, a current flows, feeding the stator and armature windings, and the starter armature begins to rotate together with the hub and freewheel.
After starting the engine, the speed of the gear exceeds the speed of the starter armature. In this case, the overrunning clutch turns freely, and torque is not transmitted from the engine flywheel to the starter armature shaft. After releasing the ignition key, the power circuit of the windings of the traction relay opens through the ignition switch, the armature of the traction relay is pressed back to its original position by a spring, the relay contacts open and the drive gear disengages from the flywheel ring gear.
Removing
1. Switch off ignition and remove a wire of weight from the accumulator.
2. Apply the handbrake, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands.
3. Remove the lower engine mudguard.
4. Remove an electric socket from the plug 50 of the traction relay, see fig. The location of the contacts on the back of the traction relay.
5. Disconnect a wire from the plug 30 of the traction relay.
6. Loosen the clamp securing the starter heat shield.
7. Unscrew a bolt of fastening of an arm of support of a back part of a starter to the block of cylinders of the engine, see fig. Arrangement of bolts of fastening of an arm of support of a back part of a starter.
8. Loosen two nuts (arrow B), securing the starter to the bracket and remove the bracket.
9. unscrew the bolt (1) М12х90, fixing the upper part of the starter, and a bolt (2) M12x67, fastening the lower part of the starter to the gearbox housing.
10. Remove the starter from the gearbox housing and remove it from under the vehicle.
Installation
1. Install the starter and secure it with bolts, tightening them to a torque of 65 Nm. Keep in mind that the starter mounting bolts are of different lengths.
2. Install the bracket that supports the rear of the starter and secure it with bolts and nuts. Tighten the bolt to 22 Nm and the nuts to 4 Nm.
3. Tighten the starter heat shield clamp.
4. Screw the wire to terminal 30 of the traction relay and tighten the fastener to 30 Nm.
5. Connect the electrical connector to terminal 50.
6. Install the lower engine mudguard.
7. Connect ground wire to battery.
