Cause | Elimination Method |
When the ignition is turned on, the battery charging indicator lamp does not light up
Low battery | Check the voltage and, if necessary, charge the battery. |
Poor connection or oxidation of battery terminals | Check the connection and, if necessary, clean the battery terminals. |
Unreliably tightened or oxidized wire on the generator contact | Check and, if necessary, tighten the fastening wire to the generator. |
Control lamp burnt out | Replace light bulb. |
Faulty voltage regulator | Check and, if necessary, replace the voltage regulator. |
Break in the wire between the generator, the ignition switch and the control lamp | Check the voltage on the circuit, starting from the generator. |
The alternator brushes do not fit snugly against the slip rings | Check the length of the brushes and their freedom of movement in the holders. |
The excitation winding of the generator burned out | Check the rotor and diodes, which should be replaced if defects are found. |
The battery charging indicator lamp does not go out when the engine speed increases
V-ribbed belt not tensioned enough or worn out | Check the condition of the V-ribbed belt and belt tensioner. |
Faulty idle clutch (only TDI) | Remove the alternator and turn the alternator shaft counterclockwise. If at the same time the movable surface of the belt pulley does not turn, then the idle clutch is faulty. |
Faulty voltage regulator or alternator | Disconnect the wire from the rear of the generator (D+) and turn on the ignition. If the control lamp still does not light up, then the alternator or voltage regulator is faulty. |
Worn voltage regulator brushes | Check the length of the brushes and, if necessary, replace them. |
Faulty voltage regulator | Check the voltage regulator and replace if necessary. |
Faulty generator | Check the alternator and, if necessary, replace it. |
Defect in the wire connecting the generator to the voltage regulator | Disconnect the blue wire in the electrical connector T32A of the block 12 of the junction box. If after that the control lamp does not light up, then the D + wire is shorted to ground and the wire must be replaced. |
Faulty junction box | Disconnect the blue wire from the T32A electrical connector. If after that the control lamp lights up, then the junction box is faulty. |
The control lamp of charging of the accumulator burns at the switched off ignition
Diode short circuit | Check and, if necessary, replace the diode. |
