Before the 1989 model year, vehicles were equipped with 4-speed gearboxes with indexes ALA, ARC, ALC and 5-speed gearboxes with indexes AFE, AFF, AGC, ASA. ASB, AYH, AYK. The types of gearboxes that have been installed on vehicles since 1989 are listed in Table 4-2. The gear ratios of the gearboxes are listed in Table 4-3.
* The time of vehicle production is indicated in brackets.
* Since model year 1989.
** Up to model year 1989.
*** The numerator shows the values for a gearbox with a "short-stroke" gear shift lever, and the denominator shows the values for a "long-stroke" gear shift lever.
**** Installed instead of the 02A CNL gearbox on vehicles with the "2E" engine.
In gearboxes manufactured since August 31, 1992 (in the "CGX" gearbox manufactured since November 30, 1992), the grooves for the crackers in the sliding clutch and in the locking rings of the synchronizer of the first and second gears have reduced dimensions.
Marking of the synchronizer locking rings for 1st and 2nd gears.
The original information is posted on the resource (VWManual)
1st gear synchronizer locking ring:
- new design: every fourth tooth is half as high;
- previous design: every fourth tooth is missing.
2nd gear synchronizer locking ring:
- new design: every fourth or third tooth is half as high;
- previous design: all teeth are present or every third tooth is missing.
Differences between the synchronizer locking rings of the 1st and 2nd gears:
- 1st gear synchronizer locking ring: without grooves;
- 2nd gear synchronizer locking ring: three grooves.
It is possible to install a sliding clutch and blocking rings of the new design together in gearboxes of the previous design.
On cars produced since September 1992, gearshift levers with a rubber protective cover and a guide bushing of a modified design are installed. The diameter of the bushing of the protective cover is increased from 22 to 26 mm.
The protective cover and guide sleeve of the new design of the gear shift lever can be installed on cars of previous production.
To adjust the preload of the secondary shaft bearings, rings with a thickness of 0.65 are supplied as spare parts (0.5 mm for cars of 1995-96.) up to 1.40 mm with an interval of every 0.05 mm.
Differential. Starting with gearbox No.13 099, the diameter of the bolts securing the driven gear of the main gear to the differential box has been increased to 11 mm.
