Replacing differential output shaft seals (VW Passat B4)

Place the vehicle on a lift. Loosen the bolts securing the front wheel drive shaft inner joint housing to the differential output shaft flange, move the drive shaft aside and hang it on a service hook to the body. Use a screwdriver to remove the plug from the differential output shaft flange. This will destroy the plug. Remove the retaining ring and spring washer. Using tool 391 (Fig. 4-69), remove the differential output shaft flange, then remove the spring, thrust washer and lock sleeve. Using a mandrel, carefully press out the differential output shaft seal, being careful not to damage the seal seat. Using mandrel 3158 (Fig. 4-70), press in a new seal until it stops. Place consistent grease between the working edges of the seal. Install the lock sleeve, thrust washer and spring. Using tool 3109, which can be made using an M10 bolt 80 mm long, install the differential output shaft flange in place (Fig. 4-71).







Install the spring washer, snap ring and new plug. Attach the front wheel drive to the differential output shaft flange. Check the oil level in the differential housing.
