Setting the initial ignition timing angle (VW Passat B4)

Warm up the engine (oil temperature not less than 80°C). Make sure that the throttle position sensor is adjusted correctly (see above), and that the idle speed and carbon monoxide (CO) content in the exhaust gases are within the norm.

Attach the control tachometer and stroboscope in accordance with the operating instructions. Loosen the distributor housing mounting screws.

Start the engine at idle speed. Remove the clutch housing hatch cover and direct the stroboscope light beam into the hatch. To better see the timing marks, lean toward the clutch housing. If the ignition timing is set correctly, the timing mark on the flywheel should be opposite the pointer in the clutch housing hatch. To set the initial ignition timing angle, align the mark and pointer by turning the distributor housing. Tighten the distributor housing mounting screws and disconnect the tachometer and stroboscope. Replace the clutch housing hatch cover.
