For 1.6 litre BGU/BSE/BSF petrol engines the camshaft is driven from the crankshaft by a toothed belt (see illustration 7.0).

The camshaft, via plate tappets, operates the vertically positioned intake and exhaust valves.

1 - bolt. Tightening torque 10 Nm
2 - middle part of the timing cover
3 - Engine mount bracket
4 - bolt. Tightening torque 45 Nm
5 - upper part of the timing cover
6 - nut. Tightening torque 23 Nm
7 - spacer washer
8 - semi-automatic tension roller
9 - bolt. Tightening torque 10 Nm
10 - camshaft gear. The gear is fixed in the mounting position on the shaft with a key
11 - bolt. Tightening torque 10 Nm. The bolt should be lubricated with protective paste
12 - bolt. Tightening torque 23 Nm. The bolt should be lubricated with protective paste
13 - rear cover of the timing drive
14 - key Make sure the fit is secure
15 - O-ring. To be replaced after each dismantling
16 - water pump
17 - bolt. Tightening torque 15 Nm
18 - toothed belt pinion on crankshaft. There should be no grease or oil residue on the mating surfaces of the pinion and crankshaft
19 - bolt for fastening the pinion gear on the crankshaft. Tightening torque 90 Nm + 90° turn (1/4 turn). The bolt must be replaced after each dismantling. Do not lubricate the bolt during installation
20 - toothed belt. If the belt is to be reinstalled, mark the direction of rotation with chalk or a felt-tip pen before removing it. Check the condition of the toothed belt
21 - lower cover of the timing drive
22 - bolt. Tightening torque 10 Nm. When installing, lubricate with protective paste
