Additional air valve (VW Golf 2)

During engine warm-up, valve 20 controls the amount of fuel entering the cylinder. However, it is necessary to provide additional air for complete combustion of the fuel, as well as a higher rotation speed during engine warm-up than during idling. This should compensate for the increased friction of a cold engine. In a carburetor, this task is performed by a system of levers that open the throttle when the diaphragm of the starting equipment is closed. In the gasoline injection system, this task is performed by an additional air valve 19 with a variable gap. This gap is changed by a plate rotating on a pivot, controlled by a spring and a bimetallic belt. During cold engine starting, the channel opens, and more air enters the engine. During engine warm-up, the bimetallic belt bends and allows the control spring to push the plate above the gap. At normal operating temperature, the gap will be completely closed. The bimetallic belt is heated according to the scheme described above in the starting regulator.
