The cap must be dry. The ignition wire sockets must not be corroded or burnt. The internal contacts must not be very deeply burnt either, as this will increase the distance between the distributor pin electrode and the contact. The increased distance will cause a high voltage to occur that is different from the voltage in the other cylinders, which will cause the engine to run rough at idle.
The central carbon brush should move easily in its socket.
The cap holes are thin irregular (capillary) cracks, which are traces of current flow from the cap contact to the distributor housing. If such traces appear, the cap must be replaced.
