The cap must be dry. Ignition wire sockets must not be rusted or burnt. The inner contacts should also not be very deeply burned, as this will increase the distance between the distributor finger electrode and the contact. The increased distance will cause a high voltage, different from the voltage in other cylinders, which will cause the engine to idle unevenly.
The central carbon brush should move easily in its seat.
The cap punctures are thin irregular (capillary) cracks, which are traces of the passage of current from the contact of the cap to the housing of the ignition distributor. If such traces appear, the cap must be replaced.
