Checking the breaker contacts (VW Golf 2)

a) Remove the distributor cap.

b) Remove the contacts with a screwdriver. Light blue burns on the contacts indicate damage to the capacitor. At the same time, gray or black burns are normal.

c) With the distributor cap removed, start the engine with the help of another person. During starting, observe the breaker contacts. If constant strong sparks occur between the contact planes, this indicates a capacitor malfunction. At the same time, weak sparks are normal.
