Spin each wheel once.
Remove foreign bodies with a narrow screwdriver (for example, small stones) from the tread, but do not damage the tires.
The tread pattern of the tyre must have a depth of at least 1 mm across its entire width.
To control wear, there are elevations in the tread grooves, located transversely to the running surface. These projections are located at equal distances from each other. On the side surface, they are marked with the letters TWI.
If these elevations are at the same height as the tread pattern, you can no longer postpone changing your tires. With a constant decrease in tread depth, driving on wet roads is significantly worse, especially if wide tires are installed.
You can tell a few things from the way your tires wear. But read about that in the next section.
Tire tread pattern
Worn out front tires indicate very fast driving on curved roads. You need to either swap the right and left wheels or swap the front wheels for the rear ones.
A tread that is worn down on one side may indicate that the wheel is not installed correctly, especially if the tire is worn down at an angle.
Severe wear in the middle of the profile indicates very high air pressure in the tire. This effect can be seen especially clearly on the rear wheels, which are usually less loaded than the front ones.
If both outer edges of the tire are more worn than the middle, it means that the tires have been driven with very low air pressure for a long time.
Dimples in the tire profile, located at regular intervals, indicate that the shock absorber is defective.
If uneven wear is found only in certain places, then the wheel is out of balance.
If in one place there are traces of severe wear of the profile, this is the result of braking with a locked wheel.
How long do tires last?
Tire wear depends less on the brand of the tire and more on the driving style. If the wheels have not been swapped, the front ones can be considered to travel 70,000-100,000 km, and the rear ones - 100,000-140,000 km. Since the front wheels must set the car in motion, turn it and withstand the main loads during braking, they wear out earlier than the rear ones. Therefore, it is recommended to swap the wheels on one side, that is, while maintaining their previous direction of rotation.
