Assembling the head

  • Lubricate the valve stems with oil and install them into the head; if possible, install reused valves in their original locations.
  • Install the lower valve spring boxes.
  • Install the sealing rings on the valve stem. To prevent damage to the sealing rings, use a special tool.
  • Install valve springs, upper boxes and mounting brackets.

Installing the camshaft

Before installing the head on the engine, especially if the engine has not been removed from the vehicle, it is recommended to install the camshaft while the head is on the work bench. This allows you to adjust the valve clearances and also makes it easier to install the camshaft seal ring.
  • Install the valve lifters in the appropriate seats together with their adjusting plates, left in place during removal of the camshaft. The markings on the plates must be on the side opposite the camshaft. Before installation, lubricate the contact surfaces with oil.
  • Place the head on wooden wedges so as to distance the joint surfaces of the head from the table. This will allow some of the valves to come out of their seats while the camshaft bearing caps are tightened.
  • Place the camshaft in its bearings and install it in a position in which the cams of the 1st cylinder are directed upwards.
  • Lubricate the camshaft journals with oil.
  • Install the cover of the 2nd and 3rd bearings, bearing #1 is the front bearing. Please note that the mounting bolt holes are offset from the journals and it is not necessary to fully tighten the bearing caps.
  • Install the front and rear bearing caps and tighten the bearing cap bolts alternately and crosswise.

  • Check the camshaft side clearance.

  • Install the O-rings at the front and rear of the camshaft. In the spare parts catalog both rings have the same number. The direction of rotation to the right and left is shown by the arrow on the ring. The ring with the arrow pointing to the right should be installed at the front, the ring with the arrow pointing to the left - at the back of the head.
  • Lubricate the sealing lips and outer parts of the ring with oil. To install the sealing rings, you must use a steel ring (diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the seals), pushing it all the way into the ledge.
  • Install the front camshaft gear.
  • Insert the bolt with a flat washer. Supporting the gear with a special device, first tighten the bolts to the appropriate torque. The rear camshaft gear is installed when installing the fuel pump.
