Removal and installation the front suspension stabilizer (VW Passat B6)

Removal

Remove the front wheels.

Loosen the mounting nuts and remove the driver's footwell trim.



Unscrew bolt 1 and remove cardan joint 2 from the steering gear (Fig. 4.33).

Remove the lower noise insulation screen.

Remove the connecting rods from the stabilizer.

Unscrew the nuts on the left and right sides of the car.

Loosen the tie rod end nuts on both sides, but do not remove them yet.

To protect the threads, leave the nut on the trunnion screwed on for a few turns.



Press the tie rod end out of the wheel bearing housing using a ball joint puller (Fig. 4.46).



Secure the subframe using brackets.



Unscrew the stabilizer from the subframe 11 and 14 (Fig. 4.44).

Remove the rocker support from the gearbox by unscrewing the bolts.

Place an engine and gearbox stand under the subframe.

Place, for example, a wooden block 1 between the engine and gearbox stand and the subframe.

Unscrew bolts 4 and 5 and lower the subframe with consoles a little (Fig. 4.44). While doing this, watch the electrical wires.

Move the stabilizer to the right in the direction of travel.



Lift stabilizer 1 forward through subframe 2 and lower it, while slightly turning it (Fig. 4.47).

Installation

Installation is carried out in reverse order.


Install the lower noise insulation screen.

Note: Before installing the steering gear, lubricate its seal with an anti-friction agent, such as ointment soap.

Note: After installing the steering gear on the steering column shaft, check that its seal is not bent where it meets the mounting panel and that the seal is correctly positioned in the footwell opening. Otherwise, water and/or noise may penetrate.

Note: Keep sealing surfaces clean.

After installation, it is necessary to perform basic adjustment of the steering angle sensor.

After completing the repair, perform a test drive; if the steering wheel is not straight when driving in a straight line, the wheel alignment angles must be adjusted.
