Until 12/94
Note: From 12/94 on vehicles with automatic transmission «01M» It is no longer necessary to check the oil level as part of a service. The oil must be changed every 60,000 km. Since the fault code memory of the gearbox must be interrogated in this case, this work should be entrusted to a specialist workshop.
Examination
Maintaining the prescribed oil level for an automatic transmission is extremely important. Therefore, once a year it is necessary to carry out this work with great care.
Warm up the gearbox to operating temperature. The temperature of the oil in the gearbox should be approximately +60°C. This state is reached after approximately 10 kilometers of driving.
Place the unloaded vehicle on a level surface.
Move the automatic transmission control lever to position «R» (parking), apply the parking brake.
When checking, leave the engine running at idle.
The oil level gauge is located in the engine compartment. Here is the gear oil (ATF) and fills up. Pull out the oil level indicator and wipe it with a clean, lint-free cloth, even better with leather. After that, completely immerse the oil level indicator, pull it out again and read the reading from it.
When the gearbox oil is warm (approx. +60°С) the fluid level must be between the marks «MAX «And «MIN» level indicator.
Check the oil on the gauge for appearance and smell. A burning smell indicates burnt friction linings. If the oil is contaminated, malfunctions in the control of the automatic transmission may occur.
Top up the oil level if necessary. Only factory-approved automatic transmission oil must be used (ATF), having the designation «Dexron». All approved oils may be mixed. Do not use any oil additives.
Caution: Do not add too much oil. Excess oil can cause malfunctions in the automatic transmission. In any case, excess oil must be drained or sucked off with a syringe.
Change of oil
Standard oil for automatic transmissions is changed every 60,000 km. We recommend having this work done at a VW PASSAT repair shop. Do not start the engine if there is no oil in the gearbox (ATF). Vehicle towing is also not allowed.
Remove the transmission pan and oil strainer at the top of the pan.
Attention: used oil must be handed over at a special point for the reception of waste fuels and lubricants.
Clean the oil pan with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Attention: When carrying out all work, impeccable cleanliness must be observed, since even slight contamination can lead to a malfunction of the gearbox.
Attach a new seal to the new strainer.
Attach the spacers to the new pan gasket.
Install the oil strainer and tighten the mounting bolts to 8 Nm.
Screw on oil pan and tighten bolts evenly to 10 Nm.
Check if an oil filter is installed. If the filter is installed, see the subsection below «Oil filter replacement».
After that, through a funnel with an extension hose, pour 3.0 liters of oil for automatic transmissions into the hole for the level indicator (ATF).
Attention: Only ATF oils with the suffix can be used «Dexron».
Start the engine. When the engine is idling, with the automatic transmission control lever in position «R» and the applied parking brake, check the oil level with a dipstick. When the engine is cold, the oil must be filled up to +20°C, see Figure 37-823.
Warm up the gearbox and check the oil level, see subsection «Examination».
Oil filter replacement
Previously, an oil filter was installed on automatic transmissions, the need for which has now disappeared. This filter has now been replaced by an insert (spare part number VW096498067), consisting of a hollow bolt and an O-ring, which closes the hole intended for the filter.
Remove oil filter -1-. To do this, place a cloth around the filter and loosen it slightly with a filter strip. Wait for a while until the oil drains from the filter, then unscrew it completely.
Unscrew filter bolt -2- using pliers.
Hole (arrow) plug it with a hollow bolt with an O-ring.
Tighten the hollow bolt to 40 Nm.
Warm up the engine and check the gearbox for leaks.
