In order for the engine to be started at all, the starter must spin it up to a speed of at least 300 rpm.
This is only possible if the starter works flawlessly and the battery has sufficient charge.
Since a large current is required to start the internal combustion engine, the condition of the wire terminals should be checked during vehicle maintenance.
Rusted contacts must be cleaned and lubricated with protective grease used to protect battery terminals.
Vehicles with manual transmission
Removing
The starter is located on the front side of the cylinder block above the gearbox.
Attention! Removing the starter for all cars is the same, however, depending on the type of engine, it is necessary to dismantle a different number of parts that make it difficult to access the starter.
1. Disconnect the power wire terminals from the battery.
Disconnect the wire first «masses» (-), and then the positive potential.
2. Vehicles with a 2.0 liter AXX TFSI petrol engine and a diesel engine. Remove the top protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.
3. All engines except 1.4L and FSI 1.4-/1.6L. Remove the air filter.
4. Remove the protective cover 1 of the traction relay (see illustration).
5. Unscrew nut 2, which tilts terminal 30 and disconnect the large wire from the starter (see illustration 10.4).
6. Disconnect plug 3 at terminal 50 by unlocking it (see illustration 10.4).
7. Unscrew nut 4 and remove terminal 5 of the wire from the top bolt of the starter «masses» (-) (see illustration).
8. Unscrew the top bolt 6 fastening the starter (see illustration 10.7).
9. Remove mudguard (protection) engine, see relevant chapter.
10. Unscrew the nut 7 and remove the holder 8 of the wiring harness from the lower starter mounting bolt (see illustration).
11. Unscrew the bottom bolt 9 of fastening of a starter and disconnect a starter from the block of cylinders (see illustration 10.10).
Installation
The starter is installed in the reverse order of removal.
12. Install the starter in place and tighten the bolts of its fastening with a force of 75 Nm.
13. Tighten the nuts of the wire harness holder, wire terminals «masses» (-) and positive potential terminals with a force of 15 Nm.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
Removing
Attention! Removing the starter for vehicles with automatic transmission is generally carried out in the same way as for vehicles with manual transmission. Therefore, only differences in the dismantling procedure are given below.
14. Cars with a diesel engine. Remove the top protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.
15. All engines except 1.4L and FSI 1.4-/1.6L. Remove the air filter.
16. Remove the protective cover of the traction relay, unscrew the nut and disconnect the thick wire from the starter terminal (+), as well as the plug from terminal 50.
17. Remove the engine mudguard.
18. Unscrew the nut and remove the harness holder from the lower starter mounting bolt, and then unscrew the lower bolt.
19. Unscrew the nut 1 and remove the holder 2 of the wiring harness from the upper starter mounting bolt (see illustration).
20. Unscrew the top bolt of fastening of a starter.
21. Unscrew nut 1, disconnect wire «masses» (-) 2 and put it away from the place of work (see illustration).
22. Remove a starter from the block of cylinders and take from a motor compartment, having submitted it upwards.
The starter is installed in the reverse order of removal.
Vehicles with 1.9-/2.0 liter diesel engine and direct shift automatic transmission (DSG)
23. Remove the top protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.
24. Remove the air filter, see relevant chapter.
25. Remove the protective cover from the traction relay, unscrew the nut and disconnect the thick wire from the starter terminal (+), as well as the plug from terminal 50.
26. Cars with a 2.0 liter engine. Release the wiring harness from the holder.
27. Unscrew the top bolt of fastening of a starter.
28. Unscrew the bottom bolt of fastening of a starter and take a starter from a motor compartment, having submitted it upwards.
When installing, the starter mounting bolts are tightened with a force of 60 Nm.
Vehicles with 2.0 liter AXX petrol engine and direct shift automatic transmission (DSG)
29. Unscrew two bolts of fastening of an air inlet.
30. Disconnect the intake air mass flow meter plug. The plug is attached to the air duct.
31. Unclench the air hose clamp with special pliers, for example, HAZET 798-5, and disconnect the hose from the intake air mass flow meter.
32. Remove the upper protective cover from the engine, see the relevant chapter.
33. Remove the protective cover from the traction relay, unscrew the nut and disconnect the thick wire from the starter terminal (+), as well as the plug from terminal 50.
34. Unscrew the top bolt of fastening of a starter.
35. Unscrew the bottom bolt of fastening of a starter and take a starter from a motor compartment, having submitted it upwards.
When installing, the starter mounting bolts are tightened with a force of 60 Nm.
