Attention! If additional electrical equipment is installed, then it is necessary to check whether the power of the existing generator is sufficient. If necessary, install a more powerful generator.
In case the battery does not receive sufficient charge, the voltage generated by the alternator must be checked.
1. Connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals.
2. Start the engine. At startup, the voltage may drop to 8 volts (at ambient temperature +20°С).
3. Increase the engine speed to 3000 rpm. The voltage should be between 13 and 14.5 volts.
This proves that the generator and voltage regulator are working. Generator voltage (onboard voltage) must be higher than the battery voltage so that it can be recharged while the vehicle is in operation.
4. Check the stability of the voltage regulator.
To do this, turn on the main beam and repeat the measurement at an engine speed of 3000 rpm. The obtained voltage value should not exceed the previously obtained value by more than 0.4 V.
If the values obtained during the measurement are outside the nominal values, check the generator in the workshop.
Precautionary measures
- When working on electrical equipment in the engine compartment, be sure to disconnect the wire terminal from the battery «masses» (-).
- Do not disconnect the battery or voltage regulator while the engine is running.
- Do not remove the alternator with the battery connected.
- Disconnect the battery when performing welding work on the vehicle.
