The hood, trunk lid or tailgate, doors and front fenders are bolted together and can therefore be removed and replaced without any problems. But in this case, during installation, it is imperative to observe the necessary clearances, otherwise, for example, the door may knock, or increased air flow noise will be observed during movement.
The gap must always run parallel, which means that the distance between the body parts must be the same along the entire length of the gap.
Permissible deviations should not exceed 1 mm.
Attention! If, as part of the body work, work will be performed on the electrical system of the car, be sure to disconnect the wire terminal «masses» (-) battery, see relevant chapter. Electrical work includes even the simple disconnection of an electrical wire.
Attention! When removing the door trim, it is recommended to use a plastic wedge, eg HAZET 1965-20. Clips damaged during upholstery removal must be replaced with new ones.
Safety rules for body work
Body work is accompanied by strong vibration, such as hammer blows. For this reason, always turn off the ignition, and disconnect the power wires from the battery poles to prevent airbags from deploying.
To perform welding work, a flash butt welding machine should be used. The use of gas welding is permissible only in cases where flash butt welding is not possible, for example, due to insufficient space between body parts.
- When performing welding or other work accompanied by the formation of sparks, the battery should be disconnected by removing the terminals from the terminals and carefully insulate both poles. When performing welding work near the battery, it must be removed.
- Do not weld or solder soft or hard solder parts of the filled air conditioner. This also applies to welding and soldering work in general, if there is a risk that the parts of the air conditioner will heat up.
Attention! Do not open the air conditioner coolant circulation system. The refrigerant can cause frostbite if it comes into contact with the skin. If refrigerant comes into contact with the skin, wash the affected area with cold water for 15 minutes. Coolant is colorless and odorless and is heavier than air. When in a pit to perform work on the bottom of a car, a refrigerant leak from the air conditioner can lead to poisoning, especially since, due to the absence of smell and color in the refrigerant, a person does not feel danger.
Drying paintwork
As part of the repair work, heating the car in the dryer or its chamber is allowed within the limits of no higher than + 80°С. Otherwise, electronic control devices may be damaged. In addition, the air conditioning system may build up pressure, causing the system to rupture.
Removing the anti-corrosion coating of the bottom
To protect the bottom and wheel arches from corrosion, they are covered with a polyvinyl chloride compound.
PVC protection in repair areas can be removed with a metal brush or heated with a hair dryer to a temperature of +180°C and removed with a spatula.
Attention! When the polyvinyl chloride layer is treated with hot air, hydrochloric acid is formed, which contributes to the formation of rust, and fumes that are harmful to health.
Windshield
Stone marks on the windshield or streaks left on the glass by the wiper blade reduce visibility.
In addition, the glass may crack. For this reason, it is recommended that stone impact marks on glass be treated as soon as possible by contacting an appropriate workshop that specializes in such repairs.
This prevents the need to replace the glass with a new one.
Expanding clamps - removal and installation
Many trim parts are secured with expandable clamps (see illustration 38.0).
Attention! Rivet 1 is easy to lose. In this case, the latch must be completely replaced with a new one.
Removing
1. Remove the expander 2 from the hole (see illustration 38.0).
Installation
2. Replace damaged retainers with new ones or insert new ones to replace missing ones.
3. Insert the expander retainer 2 into the hole and press the rivet 1. As a result, the retainer mustache expands and it is firmly fixed in the mounting hole.
Rivets - removal and installation
In order to remove a blind rivet, it is necessary to drill out its head, and then knock the rivet out of the mounting hole. This prevents expansion of the mounting hole.
Insert a new rivet into the hole and tighten with rivet pliers. Use only rivets of the same diameter as the previous ones.
The most common rivets are 2.4 mm, 3.2 mm, 4.0 mm and 4.8 mm in diameter.
