The oil pressure in the engine can be checked with a pressure gauge, which must be fitted with a fitting so that it can be used instead of an oil pressure switch.
This type of engine has a second oil pressure switch connected by a signal buzzer. If the oil pressure drops below 0.3 bar, the 0.3 bar oil pressure switch will close and the oil pressure warning light will come on. In case the oil pressure drops below 1.8 bar. and the speed remains above 2150 rpm for more than one second, the contacts of the oil pressure switch, rated at 1.8 bar, will open. The control lamp will light up and the buzzer will sound.
Check the oil level, correct if necessary.
Turn on the ignition. The oil pressure warning light should come on.
Start the engine. The oil pressure warning light should go out.
Unplug the cable from the oil pressure switch (0.3 bar) (brown insulation) and press the end of the cable against the case. The oil pressure warning light should come on.
Reconnect the plug from the oil pressure switch (1.8 bar) (white insulation).
Run the engine above 2500 rpm for at least one second. The oil pressure warning light should come on and the buzzer should sound. The above checks ensure that the oil pressure switches work flawlessly. To control the oil pressure, a manometer is provided, used by the company «Volkswagen».
Proceed as follows.
Unscrew the oil pressure switch (0.3 bar) (brown insulation) from the cylinder head and screw into the pressure control device.
Connect the blue cable 1 to the oil pressure switch.
Screw the pressure control device into the engine instead of the switch.
Attach a test lamp 2, as shown in the figure, to the cable and the positive terminal of the storage battery.
Attach cable 3 to the case.
Turn on the ignition.
Check if the lamp lights up, if not, replace the switch.
Start the engine and observe the pressure control device. At an indication of 0.3 + 0.1 bar, the control lamp should go out. Otherwise, replace the switch.
To control the oil pressure switch (1.8 bar) the following work needs to be done.
Start the engine and slowly increase the speed.
Check that the control lamp lights up at a pressure of 1.6-2.0 bar. Otherwise, replace the oil pressure switch.
Start the engine and let it run until operating temperature is reached.
Increase speed to 2000 rpm oil pressure drops below 1.8 bar, repair or replace oil pump. The alarm buzzer will sound if the oil pressure is not too low.
