Adjusting the primary gear from the clutch side, attach a special bracket 30-21 with a sleeve vw 295a (see figure 338). Assemble the shaft without the ball bearing. Screw nut A onto the bolt and, while tightening it, move the shaft so that a gap of 1 mm is formed between the secondary shaft 2nd gear pinion and the primary shaft 3rd gear pinion. The method for measuring the gap is shown in Figure 351.

In this position, lock the bolt against bracket 30-21 and check again to see if the gap has changed.

Place the measuring sleeve VW 549 on the nose of the primary shaft (figure 352) and insert a new gasket between the bearing cap and the gearbox housing. Since the spring washer for the 'U' gear was eliminated during the manufacturing process of the gearbox, its thickness must be taken into account during adjustment.

To do this, use a washer with catalog number 020311151 and, having slightly increased its internal diameter, put it on the shaft. Place this washer under the measuring sleeve.

Insert the shaft into the gearbox housing without the ball bearing. Tighten the five bolts to 25 Nm.

Install the VW 382/7 indicator stand and the VW 383/9 indicator as shown in Figure 353, reset the indicator readings to zero and set the initial value to 3 mm.

Move the measuring sleeve from top to bottom and measure the gap "x" between the bearing race and the gearbox housing. Based on the measurement result, select the thickness of the adjusting washer according to Table 20.

(The information is presented on the website: «vwmanual.ru»)

The washers are 0.30 mm and 0.60 mm thick and can be used in pairs if necessary.

Selected washer 1 (see figure 343) should be placed between the input shaft bearing and the gearbox housing during assembly.
