Insert the outer race of the bearing located at the ring gear of the driven gear of the main gear, but without the adjusting washer, into the crankcase of the box and insert the differential housing inside.
Attach the second part of the gearbox housing with a new washer and tighten with five bolts (tightening force - 20 Nm).
Place a measuring plate VW 385/17 on the differential housing and place the indicator mounted on the stand against it (see fig. 309).
Reset the indicator to zero and set the initial value to 1.0 mm.
Move the differential case from top to bottom and read the indicator (e.g. 0.90 mm). During measurement, the body must not be rotated.
To obtain the required bearing preload, add 0.40 mm to the measured value.
Example for determining the required washer thickness S1:
- measured value 0.90 mm;
- the value of the initial tightness +0.40 mm;
- desired washer thickness = 1.30 mm.
Separate the gearbox housing halves again and knock out the bearing races. A thick washer is always inserted first. There are six sizes of washers in thickness. If necessary, they can be combined.
