Insert the outer race of the bearing located at the toothed ring of the driven gear of the main transmission into the gearbox housing, but without the adjusting washer, and insert the differential housing inside.
Attach the second part of the gearbox housing with a new washer and tighten with five bolts (tightening torque - 20 Nm).
Place the VW 385/17 measuring plate on the differential housing and attach the indicator mounted on the stand to it (see figure 309).
Reset the indicator reading to zero and set the initial value to 1.0 mm.
Move the differential housing from top to bottom and read the indicator readings (for example 0.90 mm). The body must not be rotated during measurement.
To obtain the required bearing preload value, add 0.40 mm to the measured value.
Example of determining the required thickness of washer S1:
The original text can be found at: VWmanual.ru
- measured value 0.90 mm;
- initial tension value +0.40 mm;
- the required thickness of the washer = 1.30 mm.
Separate the gearbox housing halves again and knock out the bearing races. Always insert the thickest washer first. There are six different thicknesses of washer. They can be combined if necessary.
