Disassembling the starter (VW Golf 2)

1. Remove the starter from the vehicle as described in point 13.

2. Clean the starter from dirt and dust.

3. Unscrew the two bolts indicated by arrows (photo 4.6).



4. Mark the position relative to the front cover, excitation winding housing and rear cover.

5. Unscrew the excitation winding nut from the electromagnetic switch and disconnect the excitation winding housing from the front cover.

6. Loosen the bolts securing the electromagnetic switch to the front cover.

7. Unscrew the axis of rotation of the forks that move the one-way clutch (coupling) and remove the forks with the rotor and clutch (coupling).

8. Remove the forks.

9. Place the rotor vertically and slide down the cup-shaped ring protecting the spring ring seated in the groove of the rotor shaft.

10. Remove the spring ring from the groove.

11. Move the one-way clutch (coupling) off the rotor shaft.

12. If necessary, knock the bushing out of the front housing and press in a new or ground one.

13. Do the same with the one-way clutch sleeve.

14. Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
