Install the crankshaft in the following order:
  • wipe the blind holes in the cylinder block seats and insert the bearing shells with lubrication grooves lubricated with engine oil so that the projections of the shells enter the blind holes;
  • insert thrust half rings into the middle main bearing socket;

Attention! The thrust half rings must be directed with their grooves towards the friction surface of the crankshaft;

  • place the crankshaft in the bearing shells. If the connecting rods are in the cylinder block, install the connecting rod bearings on the crankshaft journals;
  • insert the lower liners (without lubrication grooves) main bearings into the corresponding caps (protrusions into recesses) and generously lubricate their surfaces with motor oil;
  • lubricate with engine oil and install the other two thrust half rings on the bearing cover with the linings facing outwards. The lubrication grooves should be located opposite the crankshaft;
  • install the main bearing caps and tap them lightly with a rubber or plastic hammer;
  • tighten the bearing cap mounting bolts in several stages, starting from the middle and outwards, to a tightening torque of 65 N·m, then tighten each bolt another half turn;
  • turn the crankshaft several times to make sure it rotates easily and without sticking;
  • check the axial free play of the crankshaft (see p. 3.6.1);
  • install pistons and connecting rods (see p. 3.4.6);
  • install the front and rear crankshaft oil seals (p. 3.6.4);

Caution: The front and rear crankshaft oil seals must be replaced each time the crankshaft or oil seal holders are removed.

  • install the crankshaft pulley;
  • install the toothed drive belt (see p. 3.7.1) and a protective belt cover;
  • install the flywheel and tighten the bolts to a tightening torque of 60 Nm, then tighten each bolt another 90°;
  • on a vehicle with an automatic transmission (AT), install the torque converter drive pulley. When installing it, tighten the bolts to a tightening torque of 60 N·m and then tighten them another 90° (see p. 3.6.6);
  • install the oil pump (see p. 4.2.2);
  • install the pan with the gasket seated on the engine sealant and tighten the mounting bolts with a tightening torque of 20 N·m;
  • all further work should be carried out in the reverse order of disassembly.
