The consequence of oil leakage through the crankshaft rear oil seal may be slipping of the clutch. Oil leakage from the front crankshaft oil seal can cause the drive belt to slip and damage the V-belt or toothed belt.
Removing the front seal
Removing the front crankshaft oil seal is carried out in the following order:
- remove the toothed belt, the protective cover of the drive and the drive belt;
- block the crankshaft with a lock in a stationary state or turn on the gear and apply the parking brake;
- remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (vibration damper), to remove the front oil seal, do the following:

- screw tool 3083 hexagon socket screw as far as possible into the crankshaft (pic. 141);
Pic. 128. Puller 2085 camshaft oil seal: And - the inside of the puller 2085; B - set screw
- unscrew the inner part A (pic. 128) puller 2085 about two turns (about 3 mm) from the outer part and fix the puller in this position with the set screw B;
Pic. 142. Removing the front crankshaft oil seal using a puller 2085
- lubricate the threaded head of the 2085 puller, slide it as far as possible over the stuffing box and screw it into the stuffing box (pic. 142);
- loosen set screw B and screw in inner part A (pic. 128) tool with uniform pressure until the stuffing box is squeezed out;
- clamp the puller in a vise and remove the oil seal from it with the help of wire cutters.
Removing the rear seal
Removal of a back epiploon of a cranked shaft carry out in a following order:
- remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel (or if the car is equipped with an automatic transmission, then the drive pulley must be removed);
Pic. 143. Removing the rear crankshaft oil seal
- install lever (pic. 143) puller 2086 on the crankshaft flange and use it to remove the rear oil seal;
- if there is no puller 2086, then the rear oil seal can be removed with a screwdriver, while making sure that the stuffing box cover is not damaged.
Note. If the engine is removed, then unscrew the cover of the front or rear oil seal (pic. 136 and 137) and remove it along with the seal. Then from the inside knock out the stuffing box from the cover.
Installing the front oil seal on a removed engine
When installing the oil seal on a removed engine, do the following:
- Lubricate the work surface and the outer side of the oil seal with engine oil and carefully press it into the cover so that the outer surface of the oil seal is completely inside. When working with a hammer, be careful not to deform the gland;
- Carefully install the oil seal with the gasket applied through the crankshaft onto the cylinder block and center it well. Tighten the fastening bolts evenly around the circle with a tightening torque of 10 Nm.
Installation of a forward epiploon on the engine not removed from the car
When installing the front oil seal on the engine, perform the following operations:
Pic. 144. Guide sleeve 3083 for installing the front crankshaft oil seal
- put on the guide sleeve 3083 (pic. 144) special tool for the crankshaft. Lubricate the inner and outer sides of the oil seal with engine oil and put it on the guide sleeve;
Pic. 145. Installing the front crankshaft oil seal
- put on the guide sleeve 3083 the pressure sleeve of the same tool (pic. 145) and tighten the crankshaft vibration damper bolt, located in the center, until the oil seal sits in its place;
- after installing the front oil seal, remove all parts of the tool.
Installing the rear oil seal on a removed engine
When installing the rear oil seal on the engine, do the following:
- lubricate the working surface and the outer side of the oil seal with engine oil and carefully press it into the rear cover so that the outer surface of the oil seal is completely inside;
- carefully install the rear cover with the gasket applied through the crankshaft onto the cylinder block, center it well and tighten the fastening bolts evenly around the circle with a tightening torque of 10 Nm.
Installation of a back epiploon on the engine which is not removed from the car
When installing the rear oil seal on an engine that has not been removed from the vehicle, do the following:
- tap the oil seal carefully with a hammer to position it in the middle. At the same time, be careful and try not to damage the working edge of the stuffing box;

- fixture 2003/1 (pic. 146) or a metal circle with a hole in the center for the edge of the crankshaft, fixed with two bolts in the threaded holes of the clutch pressure plate, evenly tightening both bolts, press the oil seal in the correct position.
Note. After installing the front or rear oil seal on the engine, all further assembly work is carried out in the reverse order of disassembly, depending on which oil seal was replaced.
