Setting the ignition is necessary for the correct connection of the distributor with the engine drive and with the spark plugs so that the spark is supplied to the engine cylinders at the right moments. Setting the ignition is carried out before putting on the toothed belt, as well as in the event of its incorrect installation or slipping of the toothed belt (the belt jumped over a tooth).

Install the ignition in the following order:
  • remove the spark plugs;
  • place the timing belt on the camshaft, crankshaft and intermediate shaft timing gears (the position of the gears does not play any role yet);
  • temporarily install the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft gear (there is no need to install the protective cover), in this case, pay attention to the coincidence of the marks on the pulley and the gear wheel;
  • crank the engine (using a wrench placed on the bolt of the crankshaft gear), until the corresponding marks match. In this case, you should pay attention to the following two points:

  • if the engine is installed on a car, it must be turned until mark 1 (Fig. 152) on the flywheel (for manual transmission) or mark 2 on the drive pulley (for automatic transmission) will not end up in the position (Fig. 152);

  • if the engine is removed from the vehicle, turn the engine crankshaft until the groove on the vibration damper is in the position shown in Fig. 153;
  • adjust the position of the intermediate shaft (with the toothed belt still not tensioned), for what:
  • remove the distributor cap to see the rotor position;

  • turn the intermediate shaft gear in the direction shown by the arrows (Fig. 154) so that the ignition distributor rotor takes the position shown in Fig. 155.
  • put on the toothed belt. Now the first cylinder of the engine is in the TDC position of the end of the compression stroke and at the ignition moment;

  • check if the marks on the camshaft gear match (Fig. 127);
  • remove the crankshaft pulley again;
  • tighten the timing belt (see p. 3.7.2).
