VW T4 engines are equipped with fully electronic ignition and fuel injection systems. This section describes the ignition system. For component locations, see fig. Digifant ignition and injection system.
The electronic ignition system is reliable, operates virtually wear-free and requires no adjustment or repair as part of maintenance.
The ignition system consists of:
- spark plugs;
- high voltage transformer (ignition coils, shutdown device, final stage);
- ignition distributor with Hall sensor;
- Digifant injection devices.
The ignition and injection systems have a common electronic control unit, which has a memory for recording faults. If malfunctions occur in the electronic part of the engine while driving, they are recorded and stored in the memory.
Before repairing the ignition system, you must first interrogate the memory of the control device. The memory is interrogated by the VW1551 reader via the black and white diagnostic plugs of the fuse box. The reader is usually not available to the amateur, and therefore it is recommended to have a breakdown of the faults at a service station.
Attention! Special safety precautions must be observed when working on the electronic ignition system (see subsection 2.14.2).
