Fig. 158. Intermediate shaft and its elements: 1 - bolt, 40 Nm; 2 - washer; 3 - gear wheel; 4 - oil seal; 5 - seal holder; 6 - O-ring seal; 7 - segment key; 8 - intermediate shaft; 9 - bolt, 25 Nm

To remove the intermediate shaft 8 (Fig. 158), the engine must be removed from the vehicle.

To remove the intermediate shaft, the oil pump drive must be removed, as the pump is driven by the intermediate shaft. After removing the ignition distributor and parts of the timing drive, the intermediate shaft becomes accessible, its mounting bolts can be unscrewed and the shaft removed.

The sealing ring flange has a return hole and must be installed taking this into account. The flange determines the axial clearance of the shaft and must be replaced if the axial clearance is greater than 0.25 mm. The O-ring creates a seal against the flange on the cylinder block side.

If the seal holder has been unscrewed, the seal should be replaced with a new one. The installation of the intermediate shaft seal is carried out similarly to the installation of the front crankshaft seal. The seal holder mounting bolts during assembly should be tightened to a torque of 25 N·m.
