The exhaust system of a gasoline engine consists of a front exhaust pipe, a pre-muffler, a middle muffler, and a post-muffler. In vehicles with a catalytic converter, an exhaust filter is installed instead of a pre-muffler.

The oxygen sensor required to regulate the catalytic converter is screwed into the catalytic converter housing or into the front exhaust pipe, depending on the vehicle model.

The exhaust system of the turbocharged diesel engine has only two rear mufflers, there is no pre-muffler.

The front exhaust pipe is connected via a spring-loaded joint to the exhaust pipe. All parts are connected with bolts and can be replaced separately. Self-locking nuts and sealing gaskets should be replaced with new ones after removal. Retaining rings and rubber shock absorbers are checked for porosity and replaced if necessary. When installing a new exhaust system, it is recommended to also update all fastening parts.

The figure shows the exhaust system of vehicles manufactured before 9/93 with engines up to 112 hp. The exhaust system of vehicles manufactured since 10/93 is shown on the next page.
