In order for the fuel to remain liquid even at low ambient temperatures, it is preheated. This is due to excess fuel which is normally returned from the high pressure fuel pump to the fuel tank. When flowing through the injection pump, this fuel automatically heats up. There is a control valve in the fuel return line that controls the flow of fuel depending on the temperature of the fuel filter.
At temperatures below 0°C, the heated fuel from the injection pump is directed to the filter. If the temperature of the fuel supplied to the injection pump in the filter rises above +10°C, then the control valve switches the flow, and excess fuel from the injection pump is sent directly to the fuel tank through the return fuel line. The regulating valve is located at the top of the fuel filter.
