Replacing the air filter of a diesel engine (VW Passat B3)

Replace the air filter element every 30,000 km. In high dust conditions, clean and replace the filter element at shorter intervals.

Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover.

Release the quick release clamps and pull the cover upwards together with the replacement air filter element.
Wipe the filter housing thoroughly.

Caution: If the air filter element is removed for repairs, turn it over with the dirty side down and carefully tap it against a hard surface before installing it. Do not clean the filter element with gasoline or wet it with oil.

Insert the new replacement element into the air filter housing.

Secure the filter cover with quick-release clamps.

Connect the crankcase ventilation hose to the cylinder head cover and secure it with a clamp.
