Attention: The battery must only be disconnected when the ignition is switched off, otherwise the injection system control unit will fail.
If the battery is disconnected, the fault codes for the engine, transmission and anti-lock braking system are erased from the memory device. Before the battery is disconnected in the repair shop, the memory device is interrogated. If the battery was disconnected, but the same faults occur after the test drive, their codes are again stored in the memory device. Other permanent instruments available (e.g. radio and: clock) when the battery is disconnected, they cease to function, and after the battery is connected, these devices must be reprogrammed.
Standard radios also have a tuning code. The coding of the anti-theft system prevents its unauthorized shutdown in the event of a power failure. A power failure occurs not only when the battery is disconnected, but when the radio is removed or its fuse blows.
If the radio is coded, make sure you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery. If the code is not known, only a VW workshop can reconnect the radio, see chapter «Devices».
Removing
Switch off the ignition.
Open the engine hood.
If equipped, remove the battery top cover.
First, disconnect the ground wire from the battery, and then the positive pole wire.
Unscrew and remove the retaining plate at the base of the battery.
Slide battery out of retainer -1- and remove.
Caution: Batteries contain toxic substances which must not be disposed of with household waste. Take old batteries to special collection points. The administration of districts and cities should inform about where such points are located.
Installation
Insert the battery into the retaining pad.
Attach retaining plate -2- to support -4- for battery mounting and tighten to 20 Nm.
Make sure the ignition is off. Attention: Connecting the battery with the ignition on leads to failure of the electronic control units.
Connect the positive wire to the positive pole (+), then ground wire - to the negative pole (-).
Caution: Incorrect battery connection can cause significant damage to the generator and electrical system.
If available, install the cover on the battery.
Attention: For the type of battery shown in the figure with vent plugs, the cover must be used as a protection against the ingress of splashing water, as well as against the release of corrosive battery acid. New accumulators with central vapor removal (flat plugs that can only be unscrewed with a screwdriver) no need for a cover.
If necessary, reprogram the radio, see chapter «Devices».
