The battery is located in the engine compartment at the front under the fuse holder. Before removing the battery, you must first remove the fuse holder and set it aside.
Caution: Disconnecting the battery erases data from the vehicle's electronic memory devices.
Depending on the radio version, you must determine and write down the radio theft protection code. Otherwise, the radio can only be connected at a VW/SEAT service station or with the help of the manufacturer. The code number is specified in the radio operating manual. This code must not be stored in the vehicle.
Note: Beta and date radio systems from VW are coded via the instrument cluster. Therefore, no code entry is required for these systems.
Depending on the equipment, the automatic up/down system of the electric windows must be reactivated after connecting the battery:
- Lock the car from the outside with the key. Make sure all doors and windows are completely closed.
- Unlock and lock the car again, holding the key in the locking position for at least one second.
- If a fault is detected in the electric windows, the lights in the switches in the doors will start to flash.
Note: To prevent the stored data from being lost, a so-called constant current maintainer can be used. Before disconnecting the battery, this device is connected to the cigarette lighter in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Note: If you are replacing an old battery, you must take it with you and hand it over to the seller. Otherwise, you will have to pay a deposit when you buy a new battery.
Removal
Switch off all electrical consumers. Switch off the ignition. This avoids damage to the electronic control units.
Open the engine compartment hood.
Pull the "arrow" handle on the side of the battery outward and unfasten the cover with the fuse holder "2" at the locking plates "1".
Tilt the fuse holder upward and unfasten it from the opposite side of the battery.
Remove the fuse holder, push it to the side together with the attached wires and put it down.
Note: Depending on the model year, the fuse box may have a different design. In this case, the cover is unfastened, folded upwards and fixed together with the fuse holder.
First, disconnect the ground wire from the battery. To do this, unscrew nut "4", remove terminal "3" from the negative pole (-) and put the ground wire aside.
Note: If the battery is only disconnected but not removed, then in most cases it is sufficient to simply disconnect the ground wire from it.
Unscrew nut "2", remove terminal -1 - from the positive pole (+) and put the positive wire aside.

Unscrew bolt "5" at the base of the battery and remove the retaining plate "6".
First remove the battery from the rear retaining tabs and lift it out of the mounting box with an upward movement.
Unfasten the wiring harness from the battery mounting box. To do this, press the hook of the plastic clamp, loosen the clamp and remove the wires from it.
Depending on the design of the mounting box, pull the strips from the sides and remove the top half of the box.
Loosen the bolts and nuts at the base of the mounting box and remove the battery holder together with its mounting box.
Installation
Install the battery holder and tighten the fastener to a torque of 20 Nm.
If necessary, attach and secure the top half of the battery mounting box.
Attach the wiring harness to the battery junction box.
Before installing the battery, clean its terminals until they shine using a brass wire brush.
Insert the battery and slide its base under the retaining tabs.
Note: The front battery is installed correctly when the center hole in the battery base mounting plate is aligned with the threaded hole in the battery holder.
Battery with vent hose: Make sure the hose is not pinched.
Place the retaining plate against the base of the battery, screw in the mounting bolt and tighten it to a torque of 25 Nm.
Before connecting the battery, make sure that all power consumers are disconnected and the ignition is off.
First connect the positive wire to the positive pole (+) of the battery, then the ground wire to its negative pole (-). Tighten the terminal mounting nuts to a torque of 5 Nm.
Caution: If the battery is connected incorrectly, the generator and electrical system may be severely damaged.
Caution: Do not lubricate the battery terminals.
Place the fuse holder on top of the battery and insert the side plates into the "arrow" recesses of the battery holder. Tilt the fuse holder down and secure it with the locking plates.
Note: Depending on the model year, the fuse box may have a different design. In this case, press the retaining tabs on the sides inward, unfasten the cover together with the fuse holder, fold it back onto the battery and secure it.
If required, enter the radio theft protection code.
If necessary, re-tune the radio to the transmitting stations.
Set the clock.
If available, activate the automatic electric windows.
