Removal
Remove the wheel cap.
Loosen the nut securing the wheel hub to the drive shaft and remove it together with the washer.
Caution: Loosening and tightening the nut must only be done with the vehicle standing on its wheels. Risk of accident!
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts, lift the vehicle and remove the wheel, see section "Lifting a car".
The cardan shaft should be supported so that after the shock absorber strut is removed it does not sag downwards. To do this, place support trestles under the cardan shaft next to the rubber corrugated cover of the outer constant velocity cardan joint.
From the engine compartment, remove the shock absorber strut cover.
Use a strongly bent ring spanner to loosen the nut from the piston rod. Hold the piston rod with a SW7 Allen key. The workshop uses the VW-3078 (for 6-cylinder engines - VW-3186) or HAZET 2593-22 device with a HAZET 2110-7 Allen key for this purpose. If a special tool is not available, a standard torque wrench can be used.
Caution: Before removing, mark the installation position of the lower shock absorber strut mounting nut. To do this, trace the head of the bolt or nut with a scriber.
Unscrew the nuts and remove the bolts.
Remove the shock absorber strut.
Installation
Install the shock absorber strut, install the bolts and tighten the nuts by hand.
Tighten the new upper shock absorber strut mounting nut to a torque of 60 Nm, while holding the piston rod with a SW7 Allen key.
Please note: To be able to use the torque wrench, the VW-3078 or HAZET 2593-22 with the HAZET 21 10-7 Allen key as a holding device is required.
Move the shock absorber strut at the bottom so that the bolts are in the previously marked position, then tighten the nuts to a torque of 95 Nm.
Screw the wheel.
Lower the car.
Tighten the wheel mounting bolts to a torque of 110 Nm.
Place the cover over the top of the shock absorber strut.
Install the wheel cover.
