Engines with contact ignition system
Periodically check the gap between the breaker contacts and the cleanliness of their working surface. The gap between the contacts should be 0.45 mm. Correct adjustment of the gap is possible only with the help of a device for measuring the angle of the distributor breaker cam.
Engines with contactless ignition system
The electronic ignition system does not require any maintenance during operation.
Spark plugs
Replace spark plugs every 15,000 km.
Unscrew the spark plugs only with a spark plug wrench, so as not to damage the porcelain insulator. Adjust the gap between the spark plug electrodes only by bending the "mass" electrode.
Interaxle differential and rear axle differential locking device
All-wheel drive car model "Passan Variant Synchro" has a device that ensures the locking of either only the interaxle differential located in the wheel drive on the gearbox side, or simultaneously of the interaxle differential and the rear axle differential.
The device is switched on by a handle located at the bottom of the instrument panel to the right of the steering column. The control lamps of the device are located under the handle. The handle has the following positions:
- first fixed position: the center differential is locked, the upper control lamp lights up;
- second fixed position: the center differential and rear axle differential are locked, the lower indicator lamp lights up.

Note: If the wheel speeds differ significantly, the process of locking and unlocking the differential may be delayed.
On vehicles with anti-lock brakes, the system is deactivated when the differentials are locked, causing the corresponding indicator lamp to illuminate (see "Brake system"),
Rules for using the differential lock device
[The original article is available on the website VWmanual.ru]
When driving on dry road surfaces, it is not recommended to engage the locking device, as this does not provide any benefits and only leads to increased tire wear when turning.
When driving on wet road surfaces, it is prohibited to engage the rear axle differential lock, and the center differential lock can only be engaged when driving at moderate speed, while avoiding high driving speeds.
On slippery road surfaces, after engaging the center differential lock, drive only at low speed. Do not brake sharply under any circumstances.
The rear axle differential lock is permitted only for the time required to get the vehicle out of a difficult situation (for example, when stuck or when it is possible).
On vehicles with anti-lock brakes, the differential lock should only be used to facilitate starting.
