Brake fluid emergency level warning light
On some models of vehicles, an emergency drop in the brake fluid level is indicated by the lighting of the parking brake indicator lamp, located in the instrument cluster to the left of the indicators.
A slight decrease in the fluid level occurs as the brake shoe linings wear out and the gap between the linings and the rear wheel brake drum is automatically adjusted.
If the fluid level in the reservoir drops quickly, this indicates a fluid leak due to a leak in the hydraulic brake system, which in this case must be checked immediately.
Brake pads
Check the thickness of the pads and linings every 15,000 km. Do not swap brake pads. Replace oily pads. Also replace slightly worn pads with linings that have come off the base or with large cracks in the linings. Brake pads are replaced only as a complete set, i.e. on the brake mechanisms of both wheels.
Anti-lock braking system
Depending on the configuration of the vehicle model "Passat Variant Synchro" an anti-lock braking system (ABS) was installed.
To the left of the instrument cluster indicators is the ABS malfunction indicator lamp, which lights up when the ignition is turned on and goes out after the engine starts, indicating that the ABS system is automatically activated, except when the differential lock is engaged.

If the warning light does not go out or lights up while driving with the differentials unlocked, reduce the speed, then lock and unlock the differentials once to turn the ABS off and then on. If the warning light still does not go out, have the system checked immediately at a service station.
