Checking the power steering pump discharge pressure (VW Passat B2)

Disconnect the high pressure hose from the steering gear spool housing and connect the pressure gauge hoses to the spool housing and the high pressure hose.

Start the engine and let it idle. Check the oil level in the power steering pump reservoir and top it up if necessary.

When the engine is idling, close the pressure gauge valve and measure the pump discharge pressure, which should be within 68-82 kg/cm².

If the pressure is not within the specified limits, check the degree of wear and cleanliness of the pressure limiting valve and repeat the test. If the valve is in good condition and the pump discharge pressure still does not reach the maximum value, replace the pump.
