Replacing rear brake pads (VW Passat B2)

Note: If the friction lining of one of the pads is worn to the minimum permissible thickness, both pairs of brake pads must be replaced simultaneously. Use only the pads of the brand specified by the manufacturer.


Removal



Remove the brake drum (see section "Rear suspension").

Use pliers to remove the lock washers 1 from the brake shoe guide springs.

Remove brake pads 2 from the lower support by hand.

Remove the lower tension spring 3.

Disconnect the parking brake cable 4 from the lever 5.

Using pliers, disconnect tension spring 6 from lever 7 of the automatic clearance adjustment device between the shoes and the drum. Unfasten the upper tension spring 8 of the shoes.

Remove the brake pads.

Clamp the expansion bar 9 of the parking brake system drive in a vice together with the pressure brake shoe and disconnect the buffer spring 10.

Clamp the wheel cylinder pistons with special pliers or secure them with wire.

Installation



Install new brake pads on the brake shield.

Connect the buffer spring 10 and install the pressure brake shoe onto the expansion bar 9 of the shoes.

Install lever 7 with the protrusion towards the brake mechanism shield.

Install the release brake shoe with the parking brake drive lever 5 onto the release bar.

Connect the upper tension spring 8.

Connect the cable to the parking brake lever.

Install the brake pads onto the wheel cylinder pistons.

Install the brake pads on the lower support.

Connect tension spring 6 to lever 7.



Install the brake shoe guide springs and lock washers.

Install the drum and adjust the wheel bearing clearance as described in the Rear Suspension section.

Press the brake pedal once fully to automatically set the gap between the pads and the drum.

Removal and installation a wheel cylinder



Remove the brake pads as described above.

Disconnect the brake hose from the wheel cylinder bleed nipple.

After unscrewing the wheel cylinder mounting bolts, remove the cylinder.

Clean the parts and check their condition. Replace damaged or worn parts.

Install the wheel cylinder in place.

Tighten and secure the cylinder mounting bolts.

Connect the brake hose to the cylinder bleed nipple.

Install the brake shoes and drum.

Bleed the brake hydraulic system.

3 - lower tension spring;
4 — parking brake drive cable;
5 — parking brake lever;
6 — tension spring of the automatic adjustment device for the gap between the pads and the drum;
7 — automatic clearance adjustment lever;
8 - upper tension spring;
9 - expansion bar;
10 — buffer spring.

2 — nipple for bleeding the hydraulic drive;
3 - wheel cylinder;
4 — cylinder piston;
5 - protective cap and cuff;
6 - spring;
7 - expansion bar;
8 - brake pads;
9 - guide spring;
10 - drum, made integral with the wheel hub.
