Tappets should always be replaced as a set as they cannot be adjusted or repaired.
It is normal for the valves to make noise when starting the engine. If they become too loud, the tappets can be checked as follows.
Start the engine and let it run until the fan comes on.
Increase the engine speed to 2500 rpm for two minutes.
If the tappets continue to operate noisily, you can identify a faulty tappet by removing the cylinder head cover and turning the camshaft until the cam of the tappet being tested points upward.
Using a wooden or plastic wedge, push the tappet down. If the gap is more than 0.1 mm before the valve opens, a new tappet must be installed.
When installing new tappets, the engine must not be started for approximately 30 minutes after reassembly, since in the event of a puncture, the valves may hit the pistons.
