Gas traction (VW Golf 3)

The connecting rod between the gas pedal and the fuel injection pump is very sensitive to bending. If it becomes loose in the engine compartment during operation and is positioned at an unacceptable angle, it may already be damaged. A clear warning signal is a heavy stroke of the gas pedal. After this, you should be prepared for the rod to crack soon. Accordingly, when installing a new gas rod, it must be handled with care.

Removal the gas rod

Remove the end of the gas rod on the pivot axle box near the fuel injection pump gas lever using a screwdriver.

Pull out the safety washer on the throttle body stop.

Pull off the casing after removing the lining washer from the rubber bushing.

Remove the rubber bushing from the cam using a lever.

For an automatic transmission, hang the rod from the drive lever and from the stop on the left side of the transmission.

Unscrew the left cover of the instrument panel (see the chapter "Interior structure of the passenger compartment").



Under the dashboard, extend the throttle rod axle above the gas pedal lever.

Squeeze the rubber bushing out of the partition between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment.

Pull out the gas rod.

Do not bend the new gas rod under any circumstances during installation.

Adjusting the gas thrust (manual transmission)

The assistant should press the gas pedal fully and hold it.

Press the fuel injection pump lever to full power.

Tighten the throttle body and insert the locking plug into the corresponding slot on the support.

Control: when the gas pedal is fully depressed, the fuel injection pump lever should go all the way in.

Adjusting the gas control (manual transmission)

Clamp an object 15 mm high (exactly) between the car floor stop and the gas pedal.

Press the gas pedal to this object and hold it in this position.

Press the fuel injection pump lever to the full throttle position.

Insert the locking plug into the corresponding groove of the gas rod housing on the stop.

The fuel injection pump lever is allowed to have a play of 1 mm when the gas pedal is fully depressed.

Remove the plug from the kick-down switch. This switch is located on the bulkhead between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment.

Connect an ohmmeter to the contact switch. It should show infinity ohms. (open).

The assistant should slowly press the gas pedal. Immediately after reaching the Kick-down point, the resistance should drop to 0 Ohm. At the same time, the gas pedal should not quite reach the stop.
